The Day the Engraver Died

On a Wednesday in March 2021, our shop's old engraver made a sound like a dying microwave. Then the display went dark. The maintenance guy stood in my doorway and said, “We need a new tube.”

I'd been in purchasing for about six months at that point. I didn't know a CO2 laser tube from a fluorescent lightbulb. But I was the office administrator for a 60-person fabrication company, which means I'm the person who turns “we need a laser” into a purchase order.   • Training time. Who will run it, and how much of their week gets eaten before they're productive?
  • Support lead time. Not just “do they offer support?” but “how many days before a part arrives?”
  • Downtime cost. What is the machine supposed to produce per hour, and what does losing a week cost?

I'm not going to quote a machine price in this post because it changes. I last checked OMTech's official site in January 2025. Their current specs and pricing are the only numbers I'd use in a budget now.

That list isn't fancy. But it changes which quote you pick. The $500 quote can turn into $800 after shipping, setup, and accessory fees. The $650 all-inclusive quote can actually be cheaper. You don't know until you write it down.

  2. Budget for the full setup. The machine is not the whole cost. Ventilation, air assist, safety, and training are part of the machine.
  3. Buy for the lifetime, not the month. A lower base price only wins if it stays lower after you add everything and estimate the downtime.

I still can't tell you the difference between beam mode and focal spot size, and honestly, I don't need to. My job is to make sure the shop has a working machine when it's supposed to. That means thinking about total cost, not the number at the top of the quote.

The engraver that died in 2021? Its replacement was another OMTech 40W CO2 laser engraver. This time, the replacement tube was already on the shelf.
